The Reason Rosacea Keeps Coming Back Is Printed On The Back Of Something In Your Bathroom Right Now

For 20 years I handed out redness creams, green colour-correctors and trigger diets. Every one of them does the same single job, and not one of them was ever aimed at the part that keeps it coming back.

By Gail Overby, retired aesthetician·Saturday, 25 July 2026·14 minute read·Independently written. Not medical advice.
Covering it is not the same as it not being there, and anyone who has done it for years already knows that.
Covering it is not the same as it not being there, and anyone who has done it for years already knows that.

The short version, if you read nothing else

  • Almost every tool ever handed to somebody with rosacea does one of exactly two things, and both of them act on the surface redness.
  • The vascular inflammation under the skin is the part that rebuilds. Nothing on the sheet is aimed there. That is why you can do everything right for years and end up where you started.
  • You can check this yourself in about thirty seconds, using a product that is already in your house. I will show you where to look.

It was turning down her own retirement party because it was in August and the restaurant had a patio.

She turned down her own retirement party.

Twenty years, and she told them she had something on, because it was August and the restaurant had a patio and she had already run the whole evening in her head and knew exactly how it went.

Nobody at that party ever knew why she was not there.

Three prescription gels. A drawer of green-tinted primer. A list of eleven foods she no longer ate.

That list was written out longhand and stuck on the fridge, where her husband could also see it. Eleven foods.

She had kept to it for four years without one cheat.

And I gave the official answer. The one I had given a few thousand times.

That rosacea is a chronic condition, that we manage it rather than fix it, that we would keep an eye on it.

All of that is true.

Every word of it is technically true, and I want to be honest that I still believe most of it.

It is also radically incomplete, and I knew it was incomplete, and I said it anyway for 20 years.

What this page is. It describes a dietary supplement. It is not a drug, it does not cure rosacea, and nothing on it is a reason to stop or change a medication your doctor has prescribed. If what you want is a miracle claim, this is the wrong page.

Everything you have already tried, and why each one stopped

Before I say anything about what I think does work, I want to go through what did not. Properly.

One at a time.

Not to make you feel worse about the money. The opposite.

There is a pattern running through the whole list, and once you have seen it you cannot unsee it, and it is the reason none of this was ever your fault.

Green tinted primer and colour correcting makeup

What it was built to do. Cancel the red optically so that other people cannot see it.

What you actually got. It works, it genuinely works, and it comes off at the end of the day.

It is a cosmetic and it never pretended to be anything else. It changes what other people see. It does not change one thing about what is happening under it.

Redness relief creams and the over the counter vasoconstrictors

What it was built to do. Narrow the vessels so the surface goes pale for a few hours.

What you actually got. A few pale hours and, for a lot of people, a rebound afterwards that was worse.

Read the packet. It says temporary relief of redness. Temporary. Relief. The manufacturer is describing a surface effect with an end time, accurately.

Prescription gels and topicals

What it was built to do. Calm the inflammation where you put it.

What you actually got. Real improvement, plateauing, and a face that still went red in a warm room.

This is the most serious thing on the list and it still acts where you rub it. Keep using it exactly as prescribed. It is doing its job, on the surface.

The trigger list. Wine, spice, heat, coffee, the other seven

What it was built to do. Remove whatever sets it off.

What you actually got. Eleven foods gone, a diminished life, and a face that still went red in a warm room.

You did the hardest thing on the list, for years, and it bought you fewer episodes rather than a different face. Discipline was never what you were short of.

“It is just something you have, we manage the flares”

What it was built to do. Set your expectations so that you stop asking.

What you actually got. You started declining things in August.

It is what is left when everything available acts on the surface.

Now go back and read the last line of each of those again.

It is the same sentence five times.

Every single thing you were handed acts on the surface redness.

Not one of them was ever built to act on the vascular inflammation under the skin.

You did not fail at any of that. You executed it.

You executed it better than most people manage, for years, and you got the result that list was always going to give you.

Three tinted creams, a colour corrector and a list of things you gave up. Two of those are camouflage and one is discipline.
Three tinted creams, a colour corrector and a list of things you gave up. Two of those are camouflage and one is discipline.

The two levers, and the one nobody pulls

Here is the thing that took me most of a career to be able to say plainly.

Almost every tool handed to somebody with rosacea does one of exactly two things.

The first is to constrict the vessels so the redness fades for a few hours.

That is the job of redness creams. It works.

It is genuinely useful, it is fast, and if you have been given one, keep using it exactly as prescribed.

The second is to cover it with pigment. That is the job of metronidazole gel.

Also real, also useful, also not the same thing.

Now look carefully at what those two have in common.

Both of them act on the surface redness. Neither of them touches the vascular inflammation under the skin.
Skin in cross section. A drawing, not a scan of a patient. Everything above the line is the surface. What sits under it is not, and nothing on the protocol sheet was ever aimed down there.
Skin in cross section. A drawing, not a scan of a patient. Everything above the line is the surface. What sits under it is not, and nothing on the protocol sheet was ever aimed down there.

That is the whole story.

That is why a person can do everything they are told, for years, with excellent discipline, and end up exactly where they started.

They have not failed. They have been aiming at the wrong target with very good aim.

How to tell whether that is what has been happening to you

There is one pattern that gives it away, and you will know within about five seconds whether it is yours.

The redness goes down while the cream is on, and by four in the afternoon it is exactly where it was.

If that is the shape of it, then the treatment did not fail.

It worked, exactly as designed, on the half it was designed for.

And then the other half, which nothing has ever touched, did what it has always done.

I watched people aim at the wrong target for 20 years, and I am the one who handed them the sights.

WHAT ACTS ON THE OTHER HALF

Your doctor is not lying to you

I want to deal with this now, because if you do not believe me on it you will not believe anything else.

Nothing on this page says your doctor is wrong, or bought, or stupid.

In my experience they are almost always none of those things.

What a doctor has is a protocol sheet.

On that sheet is the list of things that are approved, studied, prescribable and defensible for rosacea.

Every item on that sheet acts on the surface redness, because that is what got developed, that is what got approved, and that is what the training covers.

So when you ask the question, you get an honest answer from inside that sheet. "We manage it."

That is not a verdict on you and it was never meant as one.

It is an accurate description of what is available on the sheet.

The trouble is that you did not hear it as a statement about the sheet.

You heard it as a statement about your body, and about what you are going to be doing every morning for the rest of your life.

Why it keeps coming back

Think about a room with a thermostat set too high.

You can open a window. The room cools down, quickly, and it works every single time you do it.

There is nothing wrong with opening the window.

But nothing about opening a window changes the thermostat.

Close it and the room heats up again, because the thing giving the instruction is still giving the instruction.

Every gel and every primer in that drawer is a window.

Twenty-odd years of protocol sheets. There is a line on them for the surface and no line at all for what sits underneath it.
Twenty-odd years of protocol sheets. There is a line on them for the surface and no line at all for what sits underneath it.
The body is not doing this by accident. It is doing it as a response to irritation. Suppress the response and it comes back. Address the irritation and the response has a reason to stop.

Nothing you have ever been handed is aimed at that second half of it.

I am going to tell you what I think is.

But before I do, I would rather you stopped believing me and went and checked something instead.

The part the dermatology industry has no reason to tell you

I am not going to hand you a conspiracy.

I do not think there is a room somewhere with people plotting against you.

What I think is much more boring, and much worse.

The dermatology market is worth roughly $12 Billion a year, and essentially all of it is built on products that manage the surface redness.

That is where the research money goes. That is what gets approved.

That is what a practitioner has on the sheet in front of them.

If a thing is not on the protocol sheet, it does not get mentioned, and if you ask about it you get a shrug.

Nobody is lying to you. They are just not looking in the place where the problem lives, because they were never trained to and nobody is paid to.

Do not take my word for any of this. Go and check it.

This is the part of the page I would most like you to actually do, and it takes about thirty seconds.

You do not have to get up this second. Finish reading first.

But before you decide anything about me or about this page, go and fetch any redness relief product in the drawer.

Here is exactly what you are going to find.

Read the front, then read the panel.

The claim will be some version of temporary relief of redness, and if it is a cosmetic rather than a drug it will make no therapeutic claim at all, because it is not permitted to.

Temporary relief.

Temporary is not a hedge.

It is the accurate word for what happens when you constrict a vessel from the outside: it constricts, and then it stops constricting.

Everything in that drawer has an end time printed into its own description of itself.

The counter you are about to go and fetch something from. The line you want is on the back, in six point type, where nobody looks.
The counter you are about to go and fetch something from. The line you want is on the back, in six point type, where nobody looks.

Then do the same with the next one, and the one after that.

Every box in that cabinet will tell you, in the one place on the packaging where the manufacturer is legally required to be precise, exactly which half of the problem it was built for.

They all say the surface. Every one of them.

They have been telling you the whole time, in six point type, on the back, where nobody looks.

Now go back and look for the panel itself

Here is the part that took me longest to notice, and it is not a line on the panel.

It is the panel.

On most of what is in that drawer, there is no Drug Facts panel at all.

An ingredients list, and nothing else.

That means it is sold as a cosmetic.

A cosmetic is not permitted to claim it changes anything about how your skin works, because it is not built to.

Which is the whole reason it is back by four in the afternoon.

It was never anything but paint, and the packaging has been saying so the entire time.

And if the panel does not say what I have just told you it says, then I have got something wrong, and you should stop reading here.

That is a fair test and I am happy to be held to it.

I would not point you at something checkable if I thought it would go against me.

I would rather you believed the back of your own bottles than believed me.

It is better evidence, it did not come from anybody selling you anything, and you own it already.

SHOW ME WHAT I HAVE NOT TRIED

What actually acts on the vascular inflammation under the skin

After I left, I spent about eleven months reading rather than treating, which is a luxury you do not get on shift.

The two compounds I kept coming back to were carvacrol and thymoquinone.

Carvacrol is the primary active compound in oregano. It is what gives the plant its bite and its smell.

Thymoquinone is the primary active in black seed oil, Nigella sativa.

It has been used across North Africa and the Middle East for a very long time.

There is a genuine modern research literature behind it.

Oregano and black seed are agricultural crops, not patented molecules. That is exactly why no company has ever had a reason to fund the trial you keep asking me for.
Oregano and black seed are agricultural crops, not patented molecules. That is exactly why no company has ever had a reason to fund the trial you keep asking me for.

Now let me be precise about what that literature is and is not, because this is exactly where pages like this one usually start lying to you.

There is real published work on both compounds. Most of it is laboratory and animal work on inflammation.

It is early, it is not large human trials, and it is emphatically not a trial in rosacea.

And I would rather you checked that on me than took it from me, the same way you just checked the box in your bathroom.

Go to PubMed.

It is the free public index of published research, run by the National Library of Medicine, and it is the same one the researchers use.

Type in carvacrol inflammation. Then type in thymoquinone inflammation.

You will get thousands of records for each.

Open five or six abstracts and look at one thing only: what the subjects were.

Cells in a dish. Mice. Rats. Almost all of it.

I am walking you straight into the weakest part of my own argument on purpose, because you were going to find it eventually and I would rather you found it from me.

I am not going to quote you a percentage.

Any percentage I gave you would be either borrowed from something that does not apply, or simply made up, and both of those are worse than nothing.

What I will tell you is why I find it interesting.

The work points at the irritation side of the equation rather than the surface side.

Which is the side nothing else you have been given is touching.

Neither is a drug. Neither is approved to treat rosacea. Neither cures anything.

And I will say this as bluntly as I can: if you find a page telling you a supplement cures rosacea, close it.

That page is lying to you and whoever wrote it does not care what happens to you.

This is not a stronger version of what you are already doing. It is the lever nobody has pulled.

It might not be enough on its own.

It is the only one of the two levers that has never been tried.

The three things that decide whether it does anything

This is the part I care about most, because it is where almost everybody wastes their money.

Read the label before you buy anything, mine included

  • Strength. Most oregano capsules on a shelf are 150mg to 500mg. That is a seasoning dose. If you are trying to shift something that has been there for years, that is not going to do it.
  • Stated actives. If the label does not state the carvacrol content, the manufacturer is not being coy. Assume there is very little. Same for thymoquinone in black seed oil.
  • Both compounds together. Nearly every product on the shelf has one or the other. The pairing is the point, because they act on different parts of the same problem.

When I finally went looking for something that met all three, there was not much.

The one that did, and the reason I am naming a product on a page I never expected to write, is Veylor.

What it is

Veylor Oregano & Black Seed Oil is 6,000mg oil of oregano equivalent, standardised for carvacrol, paired with black seed oil standardised for thymoquinone.

The strengths are printed on the front of the bag, which is the only reason it passed my own test.

Everything I have just told you about what is in it is on the panel, not on this page.

If the panel and this page ever disagree with each other, believe the panel.

The strengths are printed on the front of the bag. That is the only reason it passed my own test.
The strengths are printed on the front of the bag. That is the only reason it passed my own test.

What it supports

  • Calms facial redness
  • Reduces flushing triggers
  • Soothes inflamed skin
  • Strengthens capillary walls

Two softgels a day, with food.

These are oil soluble compounds, which is why it is a softgel in oil and not a dry capsule, and it is also why you take it with a proper meal rather than on an empty stomach.

That is the whole claim. That is all of it.

I am not going to inflate it, because I spent 20 years watching inflated claims take money from people who did not have it.

What to expect, so you do not quit in week two

Almost nobody who tries this fails because it did not work.

They fail because they expected the wrong thing in the first fortnight, decided it was another dead end, and stopped three weeks before the part that matters.

So here is the honest shape of it, and I would rather you know it now than find out annoyed.

Four things to hold in your head while you run it

  • It will not remove visible broken vessels. Nothing you swallow does that. That is a laser and a clinic, and be careful who you let near your face.
  • It is not a reason to stop a prescription gel. Not one of them.
  • It will not do anything for ocular rosacea or for eyes that are gritty and sore. That is an eye doctor and it should be soon.
  • It will not work in a week, and the first thing that changes is usually not the colour.

None of that is a reason not to start.

It is the reason to start properly, give it the full ninety days, and judge it at the end rather than on day nine.

The people this works for are the ones who were told what to expect.

That is the only difference I have ever been able to find.

START THE NINETY DAYS

Buy 2, Get 1 Free. Three pouches, $69.99. Ninety days of it, and the third pouch is free. If nothing changes for you, you are not out anything.

What the first ninety days actually look like

I want to put this in writing before you buy anything, so that you can hold it against what actually happens to you.

If it does not go roughly like this, then it did not work for you, and you should say so and take the money back.

The first three weeks

Most people report nothing in the mirror.

If something moves early it is the heat and the stinging rather than the colour.

Weeks four to eight

The thing to watch is not how red you go. It is how long it takes to come back down afterwards.

Forty minutes instead of the rest of the evening is the actual signal and nobody ever tells you to look for it.

Weeks nine to twelve

The ordinary evening.

Somewhere warm, with people, and you get home before you realise you did not check your reflection in your phone once.

Ninety days, ticked off by hand. Nobody underwrites ninety days on something they expect to fail in thirty.
Ninety days, ticked off by hand. Nobody underwrites ninety days on something they expect to fail in thirty.

And there is a fourth possibility that every other page like this one leaves out. Nothing.

For some people nothing happens at all. Not a little, not slowly. Nothing.

That is why the guarantee is ninety days and not thirty, and it is why I would rather tell you now than have you find out on your own and feel stupid about it.

What I would tell you to watch for is not a dramatic before and after.

It is the ordinary morning where you notice, an hour later, that you did not do the thing you always do.

One woman I know sat on a patio in August and did not once check her reflection in her phone.

She called me about it. It was a Sunday.

SEE WHAT THE NINETY DAYS COSTS

Buy 2, Get 1 Free. Three pouches, $69.99. Ninety days of it, and the third pouch is free. If nothing changes for you, you are not out anything.

Who this is not for

If you are pregnant or nursing, do not take this.

If you are on blood thinners, on immunosuppressants, or preparing for surgery, speak to your doctor first, and I mean actually speak to them, not read a forum.

If you are allergic to plants in the mint family, oregano is one of them.

And if you are looking for something that lets you stop a prescription, this is not that, and anybody selling you that is dangerous.

The arithmetic, which I am not going to do for you

Other pages like this one will show you a table of what your condition has supposedly cost you, with a total at the bottom.

Every number in that table was invented by somebody who has never met you.

I am not going to do that.

I do not know what you have spent, and neither does anybody else who writes these.

You do not need a pen for this.

Just run down the list and count how many of them you can tick.

The last five years

  • Prescription gels and co-pays
  • Redness creams
  • Makeup and colour correctors
  • Appointments and laser consultations
  • The foods you gave up, and what that cost you

Most people find the honest total is considerably worse than they had let themselves think.

Mostly because it arrived in small amounts over a long period, and no single purchase ever felt like a decision.

Now hold that number next to $69.99, which is a full ninety day run of the one thing you have not tried, and which comes with ninety days to change your mind.

I am not arguing that this is cheap.

I am arguing that you have already spent multiples of it on the other lever, and nobody ever asked you to justify that.

Why three pouches and not one

Here is the part where I tell you the offer, and I want to be straight about why it is the one I would pick, because it is also the one that costs you more today.

Two softgels a day. One pouch is a month. The run is ninety days.

So a single pouch cannot complete the protocol.

It is not that a single pouch is bad value.

It is that a single pouch mathematically cannot run the test that the guarantee is written against.

It puts you at day thirty with a decision to make, at the exact point where, going by the timeline above, most people have not seen anything conclusive yet.

That is the worst possible moment to be asked to decide.

You either quit one third of the way through a ninety day run and conclude that it does not work, or you reorder in a gap, and a gap in the middle of a run is its own kind of wasted money.

The three ways you can buy it, and which one I would take

Buy 1 — $34.99. One pouch, thirty days.

Enough to start and to see whether anything moves at all, though the timeline above says thirty days is early.

Buy 2, Get 1 Free — $270.00 $69.99. Most popular, and the one I would take.

Three pouches, which is ninety days, which is the same ninety days as the guarantee.

That is about 78 cents a day, and it is the only tier that lets you finish the run without a gap in the middle.

Buy 3, Get 2 Free — $104.99. Five pouches.

Cheaper per pouch than anything else, and worth it only if you already know you are going to keep taking it.

Ninety day money-back guarantee on all three. If nothing changes for you, you say so and you are not out anything.

You are not really buying pouches.

You are putting down $69.99 on a ninety day test, and if the test fails you take it back.

Three pouches is ninety days. Ninety days is the guarantee.

Those three things are the same number on purpose, and that is the only reason I point at the middle tier rather than the single pouch.

If thirty days is what you want to risk, take the single pouch.

It is a real option and I would rather you start small than not start.

Seventy dollars, near enough, for the whole ninety days.

You have spent more than that on things that were only ever aimed at the surface, and you spent it in pieces so it never felt like a decision.

I only mention the guarantee because of what it says about the maths on their end.

Nobody underwrites ninety days on something they expect to fail in thirty.

The expensive things I watched people buy for 20 years came with thirty days, or with nothing at all.

Why not next month

There is no countdown on this page. Nothing expires tonight.

The price is not being withdrawn at midnight.

And I am not going to tell you there are four hundred left in a warehouse, because I do not know that, and neither does anybody who says it.

What I will tell you is the one thing that is genuinely true about waiting.

Waiting is not neutral. It is not a pause. It is the same thing continuing.

The vascular inflammation under the skin rebuilds.

That is the entire mechanism of the problem and it is the reason you are still doing this after all these years.

It does not sit still while you think about it.

Every morning between now and whenever you decide is another completed cycle of exactly the thing you want to stop.

Or pick a date instead of a number.

Think of the next thing on your calendar you would rather not be like this for.

Then count back ninety days from it.

If that date has already gone past, that is the honest answer to the question you are asking, and it did not come from me.

Count them, if you want a number that is actually yours.

From today to the same date three months from now is roughly ninety of them. Not ninety days of deciding.

Ninety more mornings that start exactly the way this one did.

Ninety days from the morning you start.

That is the only clock on this page and it is an honest one, because it does not begin until you do.

Decide in three weeks and you have not saved three weeks.

You have moved the finish line three weeks further out, plus however long the post takes.

There is one more clock and it is not mine

Heat is not neutral for this and summer is not neutral for this.

If you want a full run behind you before the next stretch of hot weather, or before the next thing you would otherwise decline, you count back three months from it.

That is just a calendar and it does not care what either of us wants.

Ninety days from the morning you start. Not from the morning you decide.
Ninety days from the morning you start. Not from the morning you decide.
SEE THE THREE POUCH OPTION

Buy 2, Get 1 Free. Three pouches, $69.99. Ninety days of it, and the third pouch is free. If nothing changes for you, you are not out anything.

The questions I get asked

"I have already tried oregano oil. It did nothing."

I believe you, and I would expect that. Go and look at what you took.

If it was 150mg to 500mg, that is a seasoning dose.

If the label did not state a carvacrol figure, assume there was very little in it.

And if it was oregano on its own with no black seed oil, you took one of the two compounds.

That is not a failed experiment. That is an experiment that was never run.

"Will it repeat on me, or upset my stomach?"

Oregano oil is strong and some people do get an aftertaste or a warm stomach, particularly early on.

Take both softgels with a proper meal rather than with a cup of tea, and that handles it for most people.

If it does not, it does not, and that is what the ninety days is for.

"Do I have to stop what I am already on?"

No, and please do not. Not the prescription, not the redness cream, not any of it.

Nothing on this page is a reason to change something a doctor put you on, and if a page ever tells you otherwise, that page is dangerous.

"How will I know whether it is working?"

Go back and read the ninety day timeline above and write down where you are today, before you start.

One line, today's date.

People are extraordinarily bad at remembering how bad something was three months ago, in both directions, and the note is the only defence against that.

"What actually happens after I click?"

You land on the product page.

You pick Buy 2 Get 1 Free, which is the three pouch option at $69.99, you put in your address and that is the end of it.

It arrives in a few days.

You start the next morning, two softgels with a meal, and you write your one line down before you take the first one.

"And if it does nothing at all?"

Then you say so within the ninety days and you get your money back. That is the whole arrangement.

I would rather that than have you talk yourself into a result you did not get, which is a thing people do, and which is how this industry keeps taking money from the same people twice.

And you do not have to take my word for that part either. It is a card payment.

A refund promised in writing and then refused is something your own bank enforces, not something you have to argue anybody into.

That is not my guarantee talking. That is just how paying by card works.

P.S. If you take one thing from this page, make it this.

You have not been failing.

You have been given two tools that both work on the surface redness, and nobody handed you anything for the vascular inflammation under the skin.

That is not your discipline. That is a gap in what you were offered.

P.P.S. If you do nothing else, do the thirty second thing.

Go and read the back of any redness relief product in the drawer.

You do not have to buy anything from anyone to do that, and once you have seen it on your own packaging you will never look at that cabinet the same way again.

P.P.P.S. The mistake I watch people make is buying one pouch to be careful.

It feels like the cautious choice and it is the opposite.

One pouch runs out at day thirty, which is precisely the point in the timeline where nobody has a clear answer yet, and it hands you the decision at the worst possible moment.

Three pouches is ninety days, and ninety days is the whole of the guarantee.

If you are going to test this, test it properly or do not spend the money at all.
