The Fifth Morning. My Hand On The Tap, And Nothing To Bring Up.

Twice, on a five day course my doctor was right not to keep me on. Nine years of buying, and that one week is the only real evidence anybody produced about my chest.

Patricia Nyhus, 68, Rockford, IllinoisTaught fourth grade for twenty-nine years4 minute read
A bathroom vanity in the early morning
Nine minutes at this sink, over three thousand mornings. On the fifth morning of that steroid course I stood here with my hand on the tap and nothing to bring up. Getting back there, without a drug I cannot stay on, is this page.

I hope you came here still holding it. Day one, nothing. Day two, nothing. Day three, less. By day four there was almost nothing to bring up, and on the fifth morning I stood at that sink with my hand on the tap and nowhere to put the next ten minutes. Six weeks later it was all back.

Do not feel anything about my list. Do the one thing with it that took me nine years. Sort it.

What is on this page

  • Why thirty-some purchases across nine years landed in exactly two categories, and why yours did.
  • The one line on my list that was not an item, and where your copy sits, free, at a pharmacy counter.
  • What I take, what ninety days looked like, and all three prices.

Two piles. That is all nine years were.

Every item that ever touched it does one of two things. It opens the tube, or it thins what is inside the tube. The rest chased a guess at the cause, and every guess was wrong.

The thinning pile. $39, then $52, then $35 a session, ten times.

Cool-mist humidifier, 2016, cleaned every Sunday with vinegar like the instructions said. Warm-mist humidifier, 2017, because a woman at church said cool mist was the wrong kind, so I ran both, one on each side of the bed, like I was growing orchids. Neti pot and salt packets, every morning for five months. The salt cave in Loves Park. Mullein tea, thyme tea, raw honey by the pound. Guaifenesin, the 600mg extended release, then the 1200mg when the 600 stopped mattering.

Every one of them worked, which nobody says out loud. They made it easier to move. Easier to move is still me, at the sink, at six.

The opening pile. Faithfully, twice a day, for a year.

Breathing exercises off YouTube. Pursed lip, huff cough, diaphragmatic. A wedge pillow, then a second on top of the first, which you should never do and I did for a year. Inhalers when they were offered.

Opening a pipe does nothing about what is coating the inside of the pipe.

And the ones aimed at a guess. $210, plus $34 twice a year, forever.

The HEPA purifier and its filters. Antihistamines, because the nurse practitioner assumed drainage. Omeprazole for eight months, for silent reflux. Dairy cut for fourteen months, gluten for five.

Every one chased a theory about the cause. Not one was aimed at the irritation.

Strangers sort the same way without knowing it. In a lung forum a woman praises her humidifier because it keeps the mucus thinner and easier to clear. She has named the category herself, with no idea. Two threads over: neti pot is of no help, likewise salt gargling.

Used remedies gathered together on a table
Thirty-some purchases, two categories. Not a woman who did not try. A woman who tried in two directions, never the third.

Chronic irritation makes the mucus cells multiply and the glands beneath them enlarge, so the film becomes a coating. The cilia meant to sweep it out while you sleep are overwhelmed, and in patches they stop. Once the escalator stops, one thing still moves mucus. Force.

Force is you. At the sink. Nine minutes.

Thinning something you now have to move by hand is not treatment. It is lubrication for the labor.

The one line that did not behave like the others

2022. Two rounds of steroids.

I wrote it down like an item, the way I wrote down the neti pot and the wedge pillow. It was not an item. It was the answer, in the middle of a shopping list.

I did not read that result for three years. Thin it and wait never breaks, because thinning is not aimed at anything. Calming the irritation emptied my sink in four days, twice. Which means the irritation is what fills it. Not a claim on a label. My own file, my own doctor's handwriting, and everybody watched it work.

Women write that week down in forums without noticing what they have written. The GP put me on prednisolone, it was magic, was on it for five days. A woman of sixty-seven: never completely clears but no phlegm, week later returns, and repeat. Same experiment. Nobody reads the result.

Nobody is suggesting you live on steroids, and my doctor was right not to offer. That is why the subject dies there. The one thing that proved what drives this is the one thing you cannot stay on, so everybody stops talking and goes back to buying humidifiers.

The category that week belonged to is the irritation itself. That is the empty shelf.

Two checks, and neither one asks you to trust me

The first takes fifteen seconds. Pick up whatever you took this morning and turn it over. Loosen. Thin. Make coughs more productive. Every one of those words is about what is already in your chest. Not one is about why it keeps arriving.

The back panel of an expectorant box
Every word on that panel honest, and every word describing housework rather than a cause.

The second is free and already written down. Ask the pharmacy counter to print your fill history and look for a five or six day course of prednisone. If you find it, remember what those four days were like. That is the only real evidence anybody ever produced about your chest.

A printed pharmacy record on a kitchen table
Your own file, printed at the counter for nothing, sitting there unread the whole time.

The nine dollar bottle, and what I take now

I had tried oregano before. Capsules from a pharmacy shelf, about nine dollars, all winter, felt nothing, wrote the whole idea off. Carvacrol is fat soluble, and dried leaf in a dry capsule is not an oil in a softgel, which nobody told me. I spent nine dollars on filler and concluded a compound does not work. I would like somebody to have stopped me.

The one I take now is called Veylor. Oil of oregano at 6,000mg with cold-pressed black seed oil in the same lipid softgel, so the carrier is doing a job instead of taking up room. The carvacrol and thymoquinone are stated on the label as figures.

Carvacrol is the primary active in oregano oil, studied for years as an anti-inflammatory. Thymoquinone is the primary active in black seed oil. Both act on the irritation side. Two softgels at night with water. Nothing to run, nothing to clean with vinegar on a Sunday.

It is not a drug and it cures nothing. It does not widen the tube or thin the layer, so it competes with nothing you take. Keep every prescription exactly as prescribed, the inhaler, the omeprazole, the 1200mg at bedtime. Anyone who tells you a softgel cures a lung condition is lying.

Not that this is stronger. That it is aimed where nothing else you own is aimed.

What ninety days actually looked like

Weeks 1 to 3

Nothing. Truly nothing. This is where people throw out the only thing they ever bought that was pointed the right way. I nearly did.

Weeks 4 to 6

The first change, small enough you notice it only afterwards. Nine minutes becomes seven. You think, that was quicker, then forget until the next morning.

Months 2 to 3

The shape of the morning changes more than the length. Less of it, less standing and waiting between rounds.

Months 4 to 6, where I am now

Six minutes most mornings, three on a good one, and two mornings in June where I got dressed first and remembered afterward.

What I am actually asking you to buy

Not a cure. I taught fourth graders for twenty-nine years, so I can tell when somebody is overselling, and so can you, which is exactly why you have been so hard to reach. I am asking you to buy the shape of that fifth morning, arrived at slowly, without a drug you cannot stay on. Getting dressed first and remembering the sink afterward. Getting through a paragraph out loud without stopping, which I did for a living and then could not do for nine years.

Two softgels at night. Keep every prescription exactly as prescribed.

A pouch of Veylor oregano and black seed oil softgels
Turn this one over the way I asked you to turn over the bottle in your cabinet. Both actives printed as figures, the one claim you can check before spending a dollar.

Why not next month

  • Wild oregano is cut, not manufactured. A batch is tested, the carvacrol figure printed, and the run is the size of the run. This pricing is not permanent.
  • Nine minutes a morning is over an hour a week. Another month of deciding is four and a half hours at a sink.
  • The ninety day window does not begin when you decide. It begins when a box arrives.

What people ask me

This would be purchase number thirty-one. All thirty were going to be the thing.

Then do not count it as the thirty-first. Sort it. Thirty opened or thinned. This is the only one aimed at the third category, the one your steroid week pointed at. Not a better product in the same race. The first time you have entered the other race.

I already tried oregano. Nine dollars, all winter, nothing. So do not tell me oregano.

I said that for four years and I was wrong, and you can check why in fifteen seconds. Find the old bottle and look for carvacrol with a number beside it. Most shelf oregano is 150 to 500mg of leaf and prints no figure at all. If yours is silent, you never ran the trial.

If steroids are what worked, is this a natural version of a steroid?

No, and I would not respect anybody who said it was. A steroid is a drug, it works in days, and you cannot stay on it. This is a supplement, two studied compounds, taken nightly and judged over months, and it cures nothing. That week is a clue about which category your chest lives in.

How long before I know, and what if I am wrong again?

Nothing for the first three weeks. That is what happened, not expectation management. The first change I could measure was week five, which is why three pouches run the window with no gap. If nothing changes, send it back inside ninety days and get your money back.

The cycle does not end on the day you understand it. It ends on the day you stop doing the thing that was never aimed at anything.

P.S. The wedge pillows went to Goodwill. The humidifier is in the hall closet on purpose, where I see it when I get the towels, because it reminds me that I am capable of spending nine years being extremely disciplined about the wrong thing. That is not a failure of discipline. It is a failure of aim.

P.P.S. Order the pouches, then do both checks tonight while they are on their way. If those two pieces of paper say what mine said, you will understand your last decade better than nine years of buying ever did.
