Continued from Carol Sipes's letter about her sister Janice

Her voice was fine. It was eight minutes at a bathroom sink, and in six years nobody explained why.

She quit smoking, cut dairy, lost twenty-nine pounds, and the mornings never moved by a minute. Here is the second thing in a chest like hers, and the fifteen second test you can run in your own bathroom tonight.

Empty church pews in early morning light
The fourth pew. Three years of a woman who sang twenty-six years in that choir, sitting where nobody looks, mouthing the words. She told everybody her voice had gone. It had not.

You already did the arithmetic. Somewhere in the last few paragraphs you swapped Janice's choir for your own thing, and you know exactly what your thing is, and you know exactly what you tell people about why you stopped.

The drive got to be too much. They wanted somebody younger. I was never that keen on it anyway. A good reason, delivered well, and not the true one. The true one is that you cannot be sure your chest will let you speak cleanly in front of people, so you took it off the table rather than be the woman who stops to clear her throat in a quiet room.

You think you are the only one. On a lung forum, a retired teacher wrote this about herself, as advice: "I'm careful not to use my voice unnecessarily these days." Another: "I talk a lot less than I did." Neither sentence contains the word mucus. It takes the loud parts of a life first and lets you call the loss housekeeping.

So here is the only thing on this page worth wanting, and it is not less mucus. It is an ordinary Sunday, in the row you used to stand in, opening your mouth on the first verse of something you have known since you were nine and getting to the end of it. No pause. No hand at the collar. Then the second verse.

What this page says, in four lines

  • Everything in that cabinet widens the tube or thins what coats it. Neither touches the irritation that keeps the coating arriving by morning.
  • The eight to twelve minutes is not the illness flaring. It is you doing by force the job your lung used to do overnight, for free.
  • Carvacrol and thymoquinone act on the irritation side. Nothing on my sister's list was pointed at it.
  • Take none of it on my word. Turn the expectorant box over, then any oregano bottle you own, and look for a carvacrol number.

She kept count, and the counting was the shameful part

Eight to twelve minutes at the bathroom sink, most mornings for six years, thick grey mucus in strings. She told me the number once on the phone and changed the subject so fast it was almost rude, because what shamed her was not the mucus. It was that she kept count in her head.

You keep count too. Say your number is nine. That is an hour and three minutes a week over a basin, alone, and nobody writes it on a chart. "Very antisocial," one woman calls her own throat clearing. Another, who had plainly finished arguing about it: "its embarrassing but there's nothing we can do about it."

A bathroom counter in early morning light
Nobody witnesses this part, which is why it never gets counted as a cost.

I will not pretend this is a story where she got better. She died on November 3rd, 2024, and I found the other side of it too late. What I have is her list, and what was wrong with it.

Her cabinet, and I would bet half of it is in your bathroom

I made the list after the funeral. Lists are the only thing I know how to do with grief.

Mucinex DM, the big bottle, every night for two years. Flonase, because a nurse practitioner thought it was drainage. Zyrtec, same reason. A warm-mist humidifier, then a cool-mist one when somebody said warm was wrong. A HEPA air purifier, $260. A chest percussion vest her insurance fought her on for four months. Postural drainage, head down on a wedge while her husband thumped her back, twice a day. Salt cave sessions forty minutes away, $45 a visit, twelve visits. Mullein and thyme tea. Apple cider vinegar in warm water, which she hated. Eucalyptus oil in a diffuser that ran all night. Omeprazole for six months, for silent reflux. Dairy cut for a year and a half. Gluten cut for four months. A wedge pillow for the last three years of her life.

An open drawer of opened medicine boxes and bottles
Sixteen items, close to nine thousand dollars, and not one of them failed. Every one did the job it was sold to do. None was aimed at why her lining kept coating itself.

Sort it by what each item actually does and it falls into three piles, two of which are the same pile.

Pile one. Widen the tube.

The prescription from that first ninety second appointment relaxes the muscle around the airway so more air moves through. It works, and if you have one, keep every prescription exactly as prescribed. But open a pipe with a thick coating inside and you get one thing. More room for air.

Lever pulled: the width. The coating does not move.

Pile two. Thin it, or shift it by hand.

The Mucinex DM. Both humidifiers. The $45 salt cave, twelve times. The vest and the back-thumping. Both teas, the cider vinegar, the eucalyptus, the wedge pillow. Every one makes what is in there easier to move, which is why the sink works at all. A man who has had this forty-six years and swears by guaifenesin put it perfectly without meaning to: it thins the mucus so coughing all that junk up is not as difficult, and then, next line, "You will need to do this for the rest of your life."

Lever pulled: the thickness. Thinner is not less. Thinner is easier to move, by force, one morning at a time, forever.

Pile three. Chase a different cause entirely.

Flonase and Zyrtec for drainage from above. Omeprazole for reflux from below. Eighteen months without dairy, a $260 purifier for the air. Each a fair guess by someone who meant well. If none is your cause you get six honest months of nothing, and begin to suspect the problem is you.

Lever pulled: none of yours. You cannot fail a test you were never given.

Two levers, and everybody pulls the same two

Your airway is coated in mucus on purpose, to keep dust off the tissue. It is meant to be a thin film, swept upward all night by tiny hairs called cilia, so you swallow it without knowing.

Illustration of an irritated airway lining producing a thick coating
Irritate that lining for years and the glands enlarge and the film becomes a coating. The tube can be wide open and the coating still sits where it was.

Irritated for years, the glands enlarge, the cilia are overwhelmed and in patches damaged, and the escalator stops keeping up.

Once the escalator stops, the only thing that moves the layer is force. And the force is you, at the sink, at six in the morning.

That is how a woman does everything right for six years and is still over a basin. She treated the tube. She thinned the layer. Nobody went near the irritation ordering more of it. She was bailing out a boat, and nobody looked for the hole.

Fifteen seconds, before you believe a word I say

Go and get whatever expectorant is in your house and turn the box over.

A hand holding an over the counter expectorant box, reading the back panel
It helps loosen phlegm and thin bronchial secretions to make coughs more productive. Loosen. Thin. Productive. Every word was fought over by lawyers, every word is honest, and not one word says less.

Productive means more comes up. It does not mean less arrives. Janice took the maximum printed dose every night for two years, reading a promise into it the manufacturer never made, and by morning the glands had made more.

Now the second bottle. Somebody at church pressed oil of oregano on you, you took it a month, nothing happened, and you filed the idea under things that do not work. Turn that one over too. The dose will be between 150mg and 500mg, and no carvacrol figure will be printed on it, because the label says how much oregano is in the capsule and nothing about the active compound it carries.

Carvacrol is the part that does anything, and a label that will not print the number is not hiding a good one. So you did not fail. You never got a dose big enough to count. That is a trial that never ran, and you have carried it as a failure for years.

The third lever

Carvacrol is the main active in oregano oil, the thing that gives oregano its bite, studied a long time as an antimicrobial and an anti-inflammatory. Thymoquinone is its counterpart in black seed oil. Both act on the irritation side. Not the width of the tube, not the thickness of what sits in it. The thing producing it.

Neither is a drug. Neither cures anything, and if a page tells you a supplement cures chronic bronchitis or COPD, that page is lying to you. It sits alongside every prescription you have. It is not a stronger version of what she was doing. It is the thing she never did at all.

The one I take is Veylor. Oil of oregano at 6,000mg with black seed oil in the same lipid softgel, and the carvacrol and thymoquinone content stated on the label, in numbers. Hold that panel against the bottle in your cupboard and settle it yourself.

Veylor oregano and black seed oil softgel pouch
Two softgels at night, with water. At night because the coating rebuilds while you sleep, which is why the worst of it waits at the sink before you say good morning.

I have the mild version, the one where you are always the person going "hm-hm" in a quiet room. I started in February. By the end of April I had stopped doing it during the ten o'clock news, a stupid, small thing, and the first change in eight years. That is the whole claim. I am not going to inflate it.

What ninety days actually looks like

Weeks 1 to 3

Nothing. Expect nothing. The coating there this morning was built over years and does not stand down in a fortnight. This is where the pouch goes in a drawer and a woman decides it was nonsense.

Weeks 4 to 6

Where the first change shows up if it is going to. Not as a good day. As a shorter morning. Nine minutes instead of eleven. Small enough that only somebody keeping count catches it, which is you.

Weeks 7 to 12

The pattern matters more than any one morning. Here you find out whether the sink is shrinking, and whether the thing you quit is back on the table.

Month 4 and after

Whatever you have by then is your honest answer. It is why the guarantee runs ninety days and not thirty. Thirty refunds you before the test has finished.

Keep every prescription exactly as prescribed throughout. Nothing here is a reason to change one thing a doctor told you to do.

What you are actually buying

Ninety days and an answer, which is more than my sister got. And if the sink is shorter, what is on the other side is not medical. It is that ordinary Sunday, in the row you used to stand in, the first verse all the way through. And afterwards, when somebody says they had not seen you up there in a while, telling them the true reason.

Carvacrol and thymoquinone stated on the panel. Ninety day guarantee from delivery.

Why this week, not October

Two reasons, and neither is a countdown. Wild oregano is harvested, not manufactured, and the carvacrol in a lot depends on the hillside it came off. A run gets tested, the number goes on the label, and it belongs to that harvest. The sixty percent is priced against the lot in the warehouse now.

The rest is your own arithmetic. Nine minutes a morning is an hour and three minutes a week, and every week you wait is another Sunday in your fourth pew. The ninety days cannot start until a pouch is in your house. Order this week and you have your answer by October.

The questions I got asked most after the letter

If a spice did anything for this, one of those doctors would have said so in six years. Wouldn't he?

He listened for ninety seconds and wrote a prescription aimed at the tube, which is what he was trained to do. A supplement is not a drug and does not go on a chart. Janice saw good people for six years and not one said the word carvacrol, and none of them acted in bad faith. That is what makes it worse, not better.

I am on three prescriptions and I am not mixing things in at my age.

Then do not change one. This sits alongside what you take and replaces nothing. On a blood thinner, or surgery coming? Ask at the pharmacy counter first.

And if I spend thirty five dollars and I am still at that sink in October?

You send back what is left inside ninety days, out nothing but the postage. That is the only reason I mentioned money at all. My sister paid up front to find out every time, on the vest and the salt caves and the $260 purifier, and not one came with anything of the kind.

Carol Sipes, age 61, Tulsa, Oklahoma. I do not work for Veylor and nobody is paying me anything for this.

P.S. The thing that gets me is not the funeral. It is the three years of the fourth pew. A woman mouthing the words to hymns she had known since she was nine, because clearing her chest in front of people was worse than quitting the thing she loved most. If that is you, please do not give it three years.

P.P.S. There is a recording of that choir from 2016 on the church website. She is on the left, third row. If you did not know her you would not pick her out. I know her, and I can hear her in it. Somewhere there is a recording with you in it.
