Nobody was ever going to build me a pathway. So at 64 I went and found the third lever myself.
Nobody was ever going to build me a pathway. So at 64 I went and found the third lever myself.
He mentioned a stiff knee in March and walked out with an X-ray order, a referral and a follow-up in three weeks. I lost the first hour of every day since 2021, saw five providers, and got a shelf.

If you finished what I wrote and you are still here, it was not my husband's knee that kept you. It was the line I was embarrassed to put in print.
Walking to that fifth appointment, what I said in my head was, please let this one believe me. By then I had started to wonder whether eleven minutes at a sink is normal and I am the dramatic one. That is what being brushed off does. It moves the problem into your head and puts your name on it.
A woman who teaches asthma patients for a living put it plainly. Doctors sometimes think we are being dramatic or exaggerating, she wrote, "and that can cause us to question ourselves." That is the injury. Not the mucus. The questioning.
Here is what I wanted, and it is smaller than a page like this usually promises. To pick up my own telephone at twenty to eight without planning it. To sit in the middle of a row at my granddaughter's wedding, not on the aisle with an exit worked out. To say yes to a breakfast.
What is on this page
- The two-lever picture a respiratory therapist drew for me, and why the inhaler and the expectorant both work as advertised without shortening a morning.
- A fifteen second test on a bottle in your own bathroom tonight, needing no trust in me.
Six words, from the fifth person I saw in three years
She was a respiratory therapist, not a physician, and I am exact because she was. She had thirty minutes only because the practice had an education slot nobody had ever booked. She did not look at a screen while I talked.
I told her all of it. The sink. The faucet running to cover the sound. The choir I left. The aisle seat I passed off as a preference. The tissues in every coat. Then not answering the phone before ten, which is where my voice went.
She let me finish, and then she said six words.
Three years. Five providers. Nobody had said either sentence to me.
Then she asked it. When you clear in the morning, where does it start, behind your nose and run down, or under your breastbone and come up?
Under my breastbone. Always. Four seconds, that question, and nobody had spent them. Two had treated me for the other answer. Drainage, then reflux and a pill for a year.

Two things happen in your chest and you have only been treated for one
Almost everything I had been given, she said, was aimed at the wrong target. Not the wrong organ. The wrong target inside the right organ. Here is what she drew on the back of a printed schedule.
The first is the tube. The airway. When it narrows you get tight and wheezy, and an inhaler relaxes the muscle around that tube and opens it. It works fast, and I still use mine exactly as prescribed.
The second is the layer. That tube is coated with mucus on purpose, a thin film swept out all day by tiny hairs called cilia. Keep a lining irritated for years and the film becomes a coating. The mucus cells multiply, the glands enlarge, the cilia are overwhelmed and worn down. The escalator stops.
Now open a tube with a thick layer inside it. More room for air, which is why the inhaler helps on a tight morning. The layer does not move. Three years of appointments explained themselves in ninety seconds.

Now look at your own cabinet with that picture in your head
Every item I owned did what its box said. Nothing failed me. I was aiming at the wrong target with excellent aim.
She made me take it out of my handbag and read the back to her out loud. Helps loosen phlegm and thin bronchial secretions to make coughs more productive. Productive. More comes up this morning. Not less arrives tomorrow. I read that box for two years as a promise it never made.
Thinner is not gone. The glands rebuild it overnight, because the reason they produce has not changed by one degree.
Widens the tube. Fast, real, prescribed for a reason, and mine stays. It never claimed to touch the layer, and it does not.
Right tool, different problem. Keep every prescription exactly as prescribed.
Twelve months aimed at the wrong end of me, every dose on time. The third provider said some people are just producers and wrote nothing. A woman on a lung forum put my file in one line: her tests were normal and her breathing was okay at the office, so no one believed her.
I had bailed out a boat twice a day with tremendous discipline for three years, and nobody went looking for the hole.

One mention. A whole pathway.
I lost the first hour of every day for three years and got a shelf. No cause, no plan, no follow-up. That is not medicine. That is abandonment with a co-pay, and I was finished being abandoned.
It is not only me. That asthma educator wrote down what her daughter's new doctor said: "He said she is older now, her past medical history does not count." Another woman was told by her specialist to learn to live with it. A third had a home sputum sample refused twice, and signed off in three words. I give up.

So what is the third lever
The only lever with a chance of changing the picture, she said, acts on the irritation itself. Not the width of the tube. Not the thickness of what sits in it. It is barely raised with patients, because it is not on the sheet.
She named two compounds. Carvacrol is the primary active in oregano oil, the thing that gives oregano its bite, with a long research history as an anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial. Thymoquinone is the primary active in black seed oil.
She was careful with me and I will be careful with you. Neither is a drug. Neither is approved to treat any lung condition. Neither cures anything. Anyone who says a softgel cures a lung condition is lying. Keep every prescription exactly as prescribed.
A man on a lung board typed the whole question in capital letters years ago. We naughty people who smoked have stopped, he wrote, so why do the lungs make more mucus after we have stopped. Nobody ever answered him.
The fifteen second test, which needs no trust in me
She told me one more thing and it saved me a year. I was about to buy the cheap bottle, and she stopped me.
Carvacrol is fat soluble. A dried leaf capsule is not the same product as an oil in a softgel, or the same dose. Most sold cheaply is a little oregano in a lot of sunflower oil, with no carvacrol figure anywhere. If it is not stated, assume very little.
So pick up whatever oregano is in your house, or the eleven dollar one at the pharmacy, and turn it over. Look for a carvacrol number. That is the entire test. Fifteen seconds, tonight. The bottle behind your vitamins never carried a dose big enough to count.
The one I take is Veylor. Wild oregano and cold-pressed black seed oil in one lipid softgel, 6,000mg per serving, carvacrol and thymoquinone stated on the label. That label is the only reason I bought it. Two softgels at night, because the layer rebuilds while you sleep.

What ninety days honestly looks like
Genuinely nothing. Your mornings are the same length. This is where most people quit, which is the expensive move, because you paid for the runway and stepped off it early.
Where I first noticed anything, and it was not dramatic. I finished before the coffee did. Time yourself for a week before you start and write the number down. A change this quiet is invisible without one.
Three consecutive weeks tell you what three good mornings cannot, and ninety days is how long the guarantee runs.
The irritation rebuilds. I am seven months in, my mornings are four minutes on a bad day, and they are four because I still take it.
The arithmetic nobody does at half past five in the morning
Three years went by because none of this feels urgent at half past five, when it is identical to yesterday. That sameness is the mechanism, not the absence of one.
So do it in daylight. Eleven minutes is seventy-seven minutes a week, five and a half hours a month, sixty-six hours a year. And the ninety days cannot start until a box arrives, so every week of thinking is a week added to the end. I did nothing from April until June, and those are eight weeks I would like back.
The price has a reason too, and it is not a clock on a screen. Wild oregano is harvested, not manufactured, and how much carvacrol a batch carries depends on the hillside and the summer it had. Each run is tested and the number goes on the label, so this price belongs to the batch in the warehouse now.
Before the prices, the thing all of this is for. The telephone rings at twenty to eight and you pick it up. You sit in the middle of the row at that wedding. In April I answered at 7:40 for the first time since 2021. A robocall about a car warranty. I talked to it anyway.

The questions I would have asked, in the order I would have asked them
Five people with medical degrees got me nowhere. Am I supposed to believe a softgel does what they could not?
No. It does what none of them attempted. Those five pulled two levers, by the sheet. Nobody pulled the third.
I take the maximum printed dose of an expectorant and I use an inhaler. If the strongest things on the shelf did not shorten one morning, what will a plant oil do?
Strength was never the problem. Direction was. A woman on a lung board handing out good advice wrote that these things don't stop the mucus, they only turn it from hard to shift balls into easy to shift slime. That lever, from somebody with nothing to sell you. Easier to move is not less arriving.
If this were any good, one of the five would have mentioned it.
One would have, if it were on the sheet. The sheet has two lines. Check the tube. Check the thinning. Rule out the dangerous things. Come back in six months. A doctor with eleven minutes and a full waiting room does the sheet correctly and moves on. The appointment is eleven minutes. So is my morning.
There is oregano oil at the pharmacy for eleven dollars. What makes this one worth seventy?
Turn them both over. The cheap one is dried leaf, or oregano in sunflower oil, with no carvacrol figure anywhere. This one states 6,000mg and prints both actives. That is the difference between running the test and thinking you ran it.
And if week six comes and I am still standing there for eleven minutes?
You send it back inside the ninety days, out nothing but one email. That is why the guarantee runs ninety days, not thirty. Thirty ends before the honest part of the timeline begins.
Two softgels at night. If nothing changes at the sink, one email with the word refund, inside 90 days.
Kathy Merrick, age 64, Erie, PA. I am not paid by Veylor and have never spoken to anybody there. For three years I could not find one honest page about this, and it nearly convinced me I was imagining it.
P.S. My husband's knee was fine, incidentally. Some wear, exercises he complains about. I do not begrudge that man his pathway. I begrudge that I was in the same house, on the same insurance, losing an hour a day for three years, and my thing had no pathway. You are getting the nearest thing to one three years earlier than I did.
